Surrogacy in Cyprus – What Do You Need to Know
Surrogacy in Cyprus is a bit more complicated than in European countries such as Ukraine or even South American countries such as Mexico and Colombia. The main reason behind this is that Cyprus lacks any surrogacy laws — similar to the UK and Australia.
While this means clinics can easily transfer an embryo from intended parents to the surrogate mother without facing legal challenges, this has proved a bit risky to most intended parents(IPs). Here’s why. The lack of enforceable laws on surrogacy means any agreement or contract between you as an intended parent and the surrogate mother lacks validity.
Hence, the decision to renounce motherhood and hand over the child after birth lies entirely on the surrogate mother. This can be quite disheartening to intended parents, especially if the surrogate mother decides to keep the baby.
As of now, Cyprus is not a welcoming place for surrogacy, mainly because the IPs rights cannot be protected.
